It all goes down to the
last kick of the match. Fan favorites but the finals don’t go with the fans
favorite it does go with the winners.
It was a long
anticipated final that saw Villarreal beat Manchester united and win their
first ever major trophy. This is will spare them trips in the UEFA Conference
league to low tier teams and guarantee them Champions League football against
Europe's elite teams.
So
what went wrong for Manchester United?
Starting off with the
game with a goal down was the huge mistake the Red Devils did. They are the
kings of comeback but a comeback in the finals is no easy task especially
against a Spanish opponent. With a good defense line as compared to United,
Villarreal were eager to keep the score line to their advantage despite the
immense pressure that United built up after conceding. United are poor at
defending set pieces and with their captain still in the sidelines the ship in
defense was eminently going to sink. Their defensive woes cost them the goal as
Moreno ran unattended to tap in on the free kick.
The defensive
partnership at Manchester United is shaky and hence require a reinforcement to
prevent conceding more goals. A Varane deal would be good for the Reds who is
outstanding on defensive duties.
Up front, United lacked
the perfect finish that would kill the game as the likes of Bruno and Rashford
had their impacts merely felt by the opponent. They lacked the final touch that
would translate to a goal and United came close when Rashford missed a golden
opportunity to settle the tie. It was just not United's night as they fell in
the penalty shoot outs. De Gea is not blame as he did his bit to ensure United
never conceded more goals.
Star performances were
missed from the likes of Pogba and Bruno as Cavani levelled the matters and
spared the Red devils the blushes of losing within 90 minutes.
What
went right for Villarreal?
The Yellow submarines
did what they had to do by going ahead and ensuring that the never conceded in
the first half. They would later concede in the second but were able to settle
the tie at 1-1 despite the immense pressure United had piled on them. Pau
Torres was outstanding in the heart of the defense and ensured that no through
balls passed him and ensured that the final passes never got to the united
players in the box.
We cannot forget the Kunai
Emery factor that was unleashed. He was indeed crowned the King of Europa as he
became the first manager to win the trophy with two different teams. He has got
the experience despite fielding a rather weaker team as compared to their
opponents on the night.
Penalty shoot outs
provide 50/50 chances of winning to both teams especially where the goalkeepers
have no history of saving their teams in the penalty shoot outs.
It was a dark day for
the reds as yellow was the color that lightened Gdansk in the night.
