The football calendar
has come to a close as champions have been defined and the top positions
grabbed. A clubbing experience with no fans but with footballers who would
dance to their own beats. It has been a season filled with mixed events where
fans were not allowed into the stadiums at the beginning. Players played to
their echo and artificial celebrations in a season that has felt the real shockwaves
of the pandemic. Football players got the virus recovered and got back to the
pitch. A season that saw a goal keeper score a goal that kept their team's hope of a top four finish alive. Alisson Becker's toughest season in the premier league but had one moment of glory.
Dynasties
Defied
New champions emerged as
dynasties were defied while some legends departed. Conte at the center of
bringing down Juventus with Lukaku as his main machine giving their captain and
goalkeeper, Handanovic, his first ever silverware. Lille outclassed Neymar’s
PSG in a showpiece that went down to the last day. Not forgetting Suarez
emotional celebration on winning the La Liga in his maiden season after being
ungratefully released by Barcelona. A season of shock to Juventus as they had
to wait till the last day to secure a champions league spot. The two GOATs had
to settle for 3rd and 4th positions in their respective
leagues as Barcelona yet again let the cup slip from their hands. Another
disappointing season for Messi. Besiktas won the Turkish League by a 1 goal
advantage. COVID-19 has in deed tightened the race to more competitive football
arena as final day deciders were experienced across Europe elite leagues.
Records
Broken
Bayern Munich showed no
sign of letting their hands off the Bundesliga title as they clinched their 9th
straight trophy in a row and in deed establishing their supremacy in Germany.
One of the talking points being their lethal striker. 41 goals out of 34
matches saw Lewandoski surpass the record held by Gerd Muller that stood at 40
goals. Bundesliga is in need their bed of roses as they wear their red jerseys
to enjoy the sleep. New entrant Erling Halaand got his first full season on
track as he helped Borussia Dortmund secure a top four finish.
On to England where
Manchester City won their 5th Premier League title and gave their
club legend Sergio Aguero a proper send off. The Argentine forward will proceed
to Spain to unite with Messi for a free transfer. Iconic for his 93.20 minute
goal that won City their first title in 2012 and breaking the record held by Rooney
for the highest goals (184) scored by a player in single club, Aguero will be
highly remembered by the Citizens.
European
Football
Leicester City won the
F.A but failed to make it in the top four again despite having spent the
longest time of the season in the top four. Chelsea lost to Aston Villa but a
loss at the King Power sponsored by Spurs saw them remain within the top 4. West
ham took a surprise entry to the Europa League with Leicester City while Spurs
became the first team from the England to play in the inaugural UEFA Conference
league. There will be no European football for Arsenal as they finished off 8th.
The
relegation Sphere
Schalke 04 were
relegated from the bundesliga a move that left many in surprise. A once
European elite club goes down into shambles as they exit German’s top tier
competition. Sheffield United, Fulham fc and Westbromwich Albion were relegated
from the premier league as Big Sam was for the first time unable to save West
Brom from the drop, a job that he is very good at.
Crazy
Score lines
It has been a season
that has seen crazy score lines from a 6-1 thrashing to Manchester United by
Tottenham, a 7-2 humiliation of Liverpool at Villa Park, a two fish and five
loaves of the bread (2-5) score line at the bridge courtesy of West Brom and a
9-0 thumping on Southampton at the hands of Manchester United.
Drama
on and off the Pitch
The Super League lasted
only 48 hours and which shook the top tier leagues in Europe. A super league
that would be deemed for the rich and not for football. Fans outcry against the
league were evident from the day of its announcement and which raised protests
across England against club owners. The fans felt that they were not fit to be
at the helm of the clubs and which led to matches being either delayed or
postponed as fans raided the stadiums on Match day.
We cross to the Euros
where entertaining football awaits the spectators as the competition is to be
held across major cities in Europe and the Final in Wembley.
