The last dance of the
2020/21 footballing season as an all-English final takes center stage in Porto.
2021 sets a repeat of the 2019 all-English final that saw Liverpool grab their
6th champions league title and deny Spurs their first. This final
also hosts two elite football teams in England in which Chelsea wishes to add
to the 2012 title they won in Munich. On the other hand, Manchester City is on
course to winning their first-ever champions league title and Pep's 3rd
UCL title.
Manchester City has
already won Premier League and the Carabao Cup and now in search of a
mini-treble when they face the Blues. On the other hand, Chelsea lost in the FA
finals two weeks ago when Tielemans' strike proved to be the decider and handed
Leicester their first FA cup. So will Chelsea repeat the same by handing City
their first-ever UCL title?
Thomas Tuchel made
history by being the first manager to reach two successive champions league
finals with two different seasons. The German guided PSG to their first-ever
champions league final but fell to Bayern Munich. This time he has a different
squad with different tactics employed and which he will depend on to win his
first-ever UCL title.
Pep Guardiola is a
specialist in winning finals with an 82.6% winning streak. Out of the 23 finals
he has participated in, Pep has only lost four, including one loss at Barca in
the 2010-11 season against Real Madrid and three while as a manager at Bayern
Munich. Therefore, all these have been domestic finals, giving him 100% winning
in club continental finals.
Chelsea is likely to
line up in a 3-4-2-1 formation with Mendy making a return after being
substituted in Chelsea's away defeat to Aston Villa in their last game of the
season. However, their midfield will be in check with Ngolo Kante, who has been
phenomenal for the team in the UCL. A back 3 of Rudiger, Thiago Silva and
Azpilicueta will be a probable pick for Tuchel. Kante at the heart of the
midfield, together with Kovacic, Recce James, and Ben Chilwell. Upfront 2 would
be Mount and Harvertz, while Werner will probably play as the CF.
Probable Formation:
Mendy, T. Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Chilwell, Kante, Kovacic, James, Mount,
Havertz, and Werner.
Manchester City has its
entire squad in check for the finals lining up a 4-3-3 formation. Ederson will
be in goal with Zinchenko making it in the left-back position. Walker is
guaranteed to start in the right-back position. De Bruyne will provide the
attacking options in the midfield as Fernadinho forms the heart of the CDM. Gundogan
on the number 8 role while upfront will be Foden, Sterling, and Mahrez.
Probable Formation:
Ederson, Walker, Dias, Stones, Zinchenko, Gundogan, De Bryune, Fernadinho,
Foden, Sterling and Mahrez.
