The Breakaway League
This is arguably the
worst thing that has ever happened to football. The clubs are up for the money
and not the passion of the game. The "big six" have made the
half-pack of the 12 teams that will make up the European Super League. The
competition is set as soon as it is termed practicable.
The vice-chairman of
the European Super League (Joel Glazer) had this to say, "By bringing together the world's
greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super
League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class
competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider
football pyramid."
The European Super league will be led by Florentino Perez as
the chairman and is set to grant € 3.5 billion for the participating teams.
From this, we understand why these big teams are behind the ESL. Covid-19 has
brought a major setback to football, and the big teams believe that the ESL
shall be a league that shall surpass these adverse financial crises that have faced
the football world.
So what is this European Super League, "A European
Breakaway League”?
A revenue-generating knockout competition set to have a
larger revenue distribution through the game higher than the Champions League.
Set to be funded by
the American Investment Bank JP Morgan, the ESL will be a 20-team league with
12 inaugural teams that have already been announced. Three unnamed teams are
set to join the league soon and leaving five spaces to teams across Europe. The
five teams will only qualify for the ESL based on their domestic achievements
on an annual basis.
The competition will
commence in August, where the teams will be divided into two groups with ten
teams apiece. There will be midweek fixtures that will be played home and away,
leading to a knockout face in the quarterfinals where the top 3 teams from each
group shall qualify and the remaining two spots up for grabs for the fourth and
fifth teams that will be decided through play-off matches. The knockout phase
shall continue, and the finals played on neutral ground in May.
So what was the
reaction across the football globe?
UEFA has strictly
stated that “ Every Club and player participating in the super league could be
banned from UEFA and FIFA competitions, Europeans or International." This
will mean that the super league will come at the cost of the players'
participation in their country's football competition and lose their
participation in their domestic leagues.
“I can’t focus on the
game. They should deduct points from all the six teams that have signed up to
it. Deduct points from them all. To do it during a season? It’s a joke.” Gray
Neville furiously echoed his disappointment from the top six teams’
participation in the European Super League.
“What an embarrassment
we’ve become @LFC think of all the people who have come before us at this club
who would be equally embarrassed as well.” Jamie Carragher's sentiment on how
the ESL is a total embarrassment with Liverpool Fc participation in the ESL.
With rumors that
Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and PSG are set to fill the three positions, BVNB CEO
has come out stating that "FC Bayern and B. Dortmund have 100% compatible
views " both against the Super League.
Truly, it is a total
disappointment to the football game as much as it supports solidarity,
integrity, inclusivity, and equitable financial distribution.
But as it stands, the elite football teams have made the big step. The European Super League will just need FIFA's approval and on August we shall have mid-week games apart from the Champions League.
